Nacogdoches County Marriages

On Heritage Quest tonight I located "Marriage Records of Nacogdoches County, 1821 - 1888;
Houston, Tex: unknown, 1968, 174 pages." by Pauline Shirley Murrie. I looked at marriage records for the Overalls, Selfs, Seatons, and Choates, finding some new information, and checking dates against what I already have in my database.

I also looked at "The Book of Nacogdoches, Texas" which is an early history of Nacogdoches compiled in 1927. It was interesting reading, but I did not find any of my family names indexed there. I may need to go back and read more later for historical background.

Backtracking

I received Carolyn Ericson's CD -- "Nacogdoches - Gateway to Texas, Vol. III". Spent several hours filling in some blanks in my family tree, specifically on Selfs, Overalls, and Seatons. And, as often happens, I realized that I had jumped to an incorrect conclusion on Cal Barton and his great-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Self of Cushing. As it turns out, his T.J. Self ancestor, and my T.J. Self ancestor are NOT the same person, but are probably first cousins to one another.
Cal's gr-grandfather, T.J. Self, was the son of William Self, and grandson of Abner Self, Sr., who was married to Nancy Laurence. My T.J. Self was the son of Abner N. Self, and grandson of Abner Self, Sr. So these T.J.'s are first cousins to one another, born six years apart, with my T.J. being older by six years.

No word from Cal, yet.

This is the phone number for Mr. Barton who has the website about Beech Creek Farm (once owned by William Seaton, and later by daughter and son-in-law, Lizzie and Horace Overall).
Cal's mother was Marilyn Self, daughter of Roy Self, son of Thomas Jefferson Self and Josephine Choate Self. (These were Grandmother Smith's maternal grandparents.) I hope he will contact me by e-mail, but if not, I will need to write to him before the end of the year.

Getting Started

With some trepidation, I begin my first posting on my first blog. I do not know if anyone but me will ever read this, but at the very least, it will be a way for me to keep up with my own genealogy research, and maybe help guide me as to how to proceed.

I have been doing some genealogy research for about five years now, but have only gotten really serious in the past three years. I primarily research the ancestors and descendants of Stephen Upson Smith and wife, Nancy Rust Smith, who arrived in Texas in the 1850's and settled in the vicinity of Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas. However, when information on other branches of my family comes my way, I try to pursue it. Eventually, I hope to thoroughly research ALL of the branches of my family.

This morning, I stumbled across a website about Beech Creek Farm, owned by the great-grandson of my gr-gr-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Self. http://beechcreekfarm.net/index.htm Apparently, the land which is now Beech Creek Farm in the vicinity of Cushing and Lilbert, Texas, was once owned by William A. Seaton, my gr-gr-gr grandfather. William A. Seaton was grandfather to Will S. Overall. In the 1930's, the farm was purchased by Roy Self, son of T. J. Self and Josephine Choate Self. I have written to Pat Barton, the grandson of Roy Self, who now owns the farm, to request a visit and further communication and sharing of information.

Today I ordered a CD from Carolyn Ericson, who has written the Gateway to Nacogdoches series. When I learned that Volume III, which covers Nac County residents from 1880-1930,
was available on CD for a fraction of the cost of the book, I decided to order it. Mrs. Ericson said she would get it in the mail today.
